Dominion Lodge review by thashichan

This is a Trusted Review. Why?

We paid NZD 299 per night for an en-suite room only (without meals or coffee) that was of approximately 8×15 feet with a bathroom of 5×8 feet. A double bed, a slender wardrobe (with no clothes hangers), a table, a small tv with poor reception of about 5 channels and a small fridge were cramped into the room. There is hardly any space to leave luggage. The room had a single 0.5×3 feet window situated about 8 feet above the ground. There was no heating, no bin or mirror in the room. The bathroom had a single, small mirror and a washbasin of 1 foot diameter and a shower with hot and cold water. No bin or windows in the bathroom.

I was informed by email that credit cards were not accepted. We arrived on the property around 2 am after travelling for about 20 hours across time zones, but was asked to make the full payment in cash immediately.

During our stay of 1 week, neither the room nor the bathroom was cleaned. No such service existed. There is a common kitchen which can be used up to 10.30 pm. The cupboards in the kitchen had rotting, moulding food in them.

There are few aluminium tables provided for dining. The landlady (of Indian origin) provides a dust pan and broom and insists that you clean up if any crumbs are dropped.

The check out time is 10 am, but you will be reminded every 5 minutes from about 9 am to leave the room and return the towels.

Advice: Inspect the facility before you make the payment. The photos on the website are misleading and the payment is non-refundable. Also, compare prices/rates of 3 to 5 star hotels in Auckland before booking this property.

Kina Backpackers review by petergally

About Kina Backpackers

Kina Backpackers provides the budget-minded traveller true value for money on Waiheke Island, 35 minutes from downtown Auckland – it’s your very own piece of paradise.

We’re the closest hostel to the waterfront on all of Waiheke Island! Best of all, we’re next to the longest beach on the island, a full mile of white sand and cool waters. We’re also only two minutes’ walk from the bus stop, minutes from great cafes and vineyards, and only a short bus ride from the supermarket or Oneroa shops!

Our warm and relaxed hostel has 40 beds, ranging from an en suite double room to a seven-bed dorm. We have a fully-equipped kitchen, large bathrooms and showers, Wi-Fi access and a small shop selling food and other useful things for travellers. There’s a jobs board, luggage storage and 24-hour reception as well!

Here you can wake up to the sound of the birds or go for a morning walk along Onetangi beach. Your hosts, Luke and Erin, will gladly provide reliable, unbiased info on all the local tours and activities. Whether you’re looking for tranquillity or adventure, we’ve got the best tips!

About Nelson Beach Hostel

We welcome all travellers to our backpackers’ hostel, close to the airport and the beach, with bicycles and BBQs!

Nelson Beach Hostel and Backpackers welcomes all travellers. We provide fully made-up beds in a comfortable quiet hostel near a beautiful beach. Our rooms include en suite double, single, double, twin, and dorm arrangements.

Loads of cafés, restaurants, bars and activities (such as kite boarding) are all within walking distance. This is a great base for an Able Tasman tramp and we’re the closest hostel to Nelson Airport.

Nelson is the sunshine capital of New Zealand and we’re only a stroll away from Tahuna Beach where the water is the warmest in the country! Our peaceful garden has two hammocks and deck chairs, for further chilling out.

Freebees include a ‘find it and do it’ map, herb and spices, tea and use of the BBQ. Our house is eco-friendly, with free use of our bikes, and free popcorn, too. We have Wi-Fi and Internet plus a large, spacious lounge, a great place to socialise and exchange books.

You can buy a voucher for breakfast the night before, for $9 per person for cereals, toast, tea/coffee and juice. It’s only $4 to do a load of washing and drying!

Welcome to our homey, cosy hostel!

hello,
i wanted to tell you about that hostel.

you need to sign a contract that you stay 8 weeks otherwise you didnt recieve your holiday pay.

when i needed to quit earlier everything seemed to be allright. nicolette asked me how long i wanna work.

she dint said enything about that i wont recieve my last wage.

after two weeks i wondered where my money is. i contacted them via mail and visite them, because they didnt answered.
when i visite the hostel they only wondered why i didnt recieved my money.

than i got an email after my last try where i phoned nicolette on her mobile and was allready really pissed. she was not available.

she wrote me that she dont understand where the problem is and that they weren’t able to find someone for me. which is definitly a lie. and that it is my problem when i decide to go earlier and said that she told me that i wont get the last wage. which ist definitly also a lie. she didnt said anything.

i heard from a lot people who didnt recieved money from them. so dont go to that hostel and work for them on a vineyard.
i didnt got around 450 dollar.

after tough luck with the first van i bought and many annoying problems with this car i decided to give up the struggling and to buy the next van much more careful. even though i was really skeptical when i saw this one due to the few dents and scratches (as you can see on the pictures) i don´t regret my decision for her at all!

this toyota hi ace was built in december 1991, has got a 2.4 liter diesel engine (2446 ccm) and reaches easily about 120km per hour (even carrying a heavy load!) she might already be a well experienced girl called lady time and was really not born as beauty queen but she´s ok with that!

the engine is really tidy and she has always been reliable after i replaced the already aged battery with a more powerful new one. i never had problems getting where i needed to be after the battery replacement, in all sorts of conditions – as fast as the law allowed me to travel. a full tank will take you 550-650 km (depending on the terrain – mountains make her more thirsty…) before you have to top up with diesel instead of the more expensive fuel.

another big benefit: in this van, you look like a local and not like a tourist!

the freedom camping became difficult in nz during the last two years because of the new law. also newer looking vans are in general even more attractive for car break ins!

not many thefts would expect some hi tech equipment like a notebook (or even macbook) and cameras (or even dslr or video cams) inside this often at lonesome road ends parked vehicle. ;) i had never a problem with break ins due to the inconspicuous appearance of this lady…

it´s classified as ‘light van’ or ‘car’ so is cheap on the ferries!

i also provide a new zealand camping and motorhome atlas for the north- and south island with all camp grounds – even classified (doc, holiday parks, motorhome parks, rest areas) including the available facilities and notes of the author – whether its a nice place or what you can expect to find close to the place, many more or less famous hiking tracks and/or great walks including all backcountry huts, all of the lord of the rings movie locations and many other useful informations.

347000 km may sound a lot but for this engines it´s not even half time – especially the diesel ones run here almost always up to and above 999999 km after they passed successfully the 200000 mark…

after chatting with several mechanics i think the price is more than fair due to the heaps of really useful equipment. you just need a small gas stove (about 30 nzd) – because i´ll take my trangia spirit stove with me and you are really ready to go for a very comfortable journey through this awesome country!!!

Some employers offer budget accommodation particularly orchards and farms. During the summer months a lot of the backpacker hostels prefer not to have seasonal workers staying (the hostels are busy looking after short-term travellers) but some are ok about it so just ask around. Staying in cabins and tenting at Holiday Parks is a good option. Or look in the newspapers under places to rent. You can just rent a room in a house with others or if there is a group of you you maybe able to rent a whole house.

If you are here in the off-season (May – Nov) then you will most likely be able to stay in a Backpacker Hostel and many will offer reasonable weekly rates (somewhere around $100 – $130 per week). A popular option for Backpackers is to work an afternoon shift for one of the fishing companies or in a cafe, stay in a hostel and do exchange cleaning work in the mornings to pay for accommodation. The only problem with this is that you can get extremely tired and end up not enjoying yourself at all (what are you travelling for again …?).
